Why Take Web Development?

Web-based platforms are increasingly becoming the first and primary touch points between businesses and their customers. In an always on, mobile-first, world, the exchanges have the potential to make or break a business’ success.

Well-researched user experience design and robust back-end code alone cannot meet this challenge. Companies rely on front-end developers to be the critical bridge that fuses design with code to form the public face online. The Web Development Foundation program is an introduction to web development. Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to build an interactive responsive website with version control.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Code standards compliant HTML5/CSS
  • Use CSS for aesthetic web design including adding colour, changing fonts, changing backgrounds, adding borders, controlling spacing and creating layouts
  • Learn about wireframe tools to mock-up a webpage Understand the basics of Git/GitHub
  • Apply responsive web design concepts to websites Demonstrate the use of web fonts, icon fonts, app icons and favicons
  • Apply basic JavaScript and jQuery functions
  • Understand web hosting fundamentals such as domain names and different hosting environments
  • Show how Ajax can fetch data from external APIs and dynamically populate it into a website, and much more.

“Taking the program was incredible, best decision I made in my life. The instructors were awesome and the students were great.” – Blaze Kroeger, Web Development Student Fall ’15

Why Take User Experience Design?

Throughout the course of a day, we have thousands of interactions with people, places, products, and services. Increasingly, these interactions are taking place in a digital realm.
Companies in turn rely on effective User Experience Designers to identify, understand, and meet these needs. UX Design combines creativity, empathy, logic, and technical skill to create intuitive digital experiences.

This program is an introduction to user experience design. Students will gain introductory skills in research, planning, design, testing and iterating for digital products.
